this year's grantees.
This
is the second year of The Medical Foundation's Youth Action
Initiative (YAI) which is leading the statewide youth movement
against tobacco use in partnership with the Massachusetts Tobacco
Control Program. The Medical Foundation (TMF) has served as
a leader in the efforts toward preventing youth tobacco use
in Massachusetts .
Last
year, forty grants were given to youth groups all across the
state. In 2007, YAI will also award forty
Get the Word Out Mini-Grants to local youth groups committed
to tobacco use prevention. Awards will be made based on availability
of funds. These projects will Get the Word Out about eliminating
tobacco from communities, about standing up to the tobacco industry,
and about Making Smoking History.

Standing Up to Big Tobacco: The corporate tobacco industry,
or "Big Tobacco," has its influence in every corner of society.
The trick is being aware that the influence is out there and
then working to counter the industry message. Young people have
the power and the creativity to take on the challenge of stepping
up to Big Tobacco. Click here

Smoke-Free
Schools: Smoking in school buildings and on school grounds
exposes people to secondhand smoke. Plus it's illegal according
to the state law. Walk into many school bathrooms and you can
smell the smoke! What can YOU do to make your public school
truly smoke-free? Click here
for a list of grantees.
Tobacco
Use in the Entertainment Industry: Since the Master Settlement
Agreement, there have been more restrictions on where and how
tobacco companies can advertise. However, many of our role models
in the entertainment industry (actors, athletes, singers, musicians)
smoke either onscreen or in real life. Isn't it time they realized
what kind of an influence that has on young people? Deadline:
