The
Youth Advisory Group ( YAG ) is part of the Youth Action Initiative
(YAI) which is a group whose goal is to inform people, especially
teens, of the dangers of tobacco and start a movement and campaign
against smoking.
The
YAG will meet once every month for 8 months to accomplish two
main tasks: a summit that is to take place in March, and a website
raising awareness and promoting YAG ’s cause.
The
20 teens that make up the YAG will divide into two groups.
One will be in charge of building the website, and the other
will plan the Summit which is an annual event run by YAI and
YAG during which hundreds of teens from Massachusetts participate
in various activities and learn about tobacco and its harmful
effects. In addition to the monthly meetings, the group will
hold conference calls once in between every meeting to discuss
homework and plan future meetings.

Here's
a chance to get some monthly updates from our youth on the Youth
Advisory Group meetings.
Recently
we had another meeting Saturday of February 10th, 2007.
The ice breakers of the day were "A Rose and a Thorn"
and "Human Bingo." Afterwards everyone worked
on parts of planning the Summit. We worked on the agenda
for the upcoming 2nd Annual Youth Summit and that included a
group activity and the activities for the lunch time. The main
goals of the summit are to create partnership between the youth
and adults as well as making sure that everyone walks away feeling
as an advocate.
On
t he Saturday of January 20th, the Youth Advisory
Group got together and we discussed more about our individual
accomplishments in getting people to stop smoking tobacco. We
also about strategies of how we could improve our upcoming website,
like the theme and logo we wanted.
We
also discussed ways that we could use to barn smoking in schools
and in our communities in general. Most of all we came up with
some ideas that could impact the lives of people who smoke and
could hopefully get them to quit. For example making a large
mural composed of photos of loved ones lost to tabacco and in
big letters at the top saying, "THIS COULD BE YOU".
