Still recovering

Tell us your story:

I had a pain in my chest for several weeks. Not sure of what it was, I got on the internet and read about symptoms of lung cancer. I was at the doctors office the next day... in tears as she reviewed my chest xray. I was terrified of the outcome. Luckily it was not any type of cancer or lung disease (just a pulled muscle in my chest). But I did have a small amount of lung damage already. It's enough for me to know I don't EVER want to be scared like that again.... the idea of an early grave, the pain my kids would go through. No more. So every time I want to light up I tell myself I can't. I just can't.... and the urge to light up will eventually subside. But I HAVE to stick with it. However, if I do have even one puff I will go back to where I was.... scared of lung cancer when it's just a pulled muscle. And if I keep smoking there may be a tumor there the next time.

How long have you been a non-smoker?

8 days

What are your three favorite Quit Tips?

  • Check the internet for smoking horror stories when you want to light up
  • Nicotine gum
  • Think of your kids, and your kids kids

What prompted you to quit?

I'm scared of dying.

How do you feel now?

It's hard and I'm only 8 days in. But I feel a sense of liberation. It's me against them, and I WILL win.

What words of wisdom/support would you like to pass on to others who are in the process of quitting or who are thinking about it?

Stick it out. When it's hard remember that it will only be hard for now.... It WILL get easier, but you have to fight. I'm still fighting. But I do believe it will get better.
