Tell us your story:

I called 1-800-try-to-stop. They had groups that met in various places and I went to one. People came and went, some stopped smoking, some stopped coming. I could not go one day without smoking, but I never missed a week of that group.

Another year passed.

The leader of the group said to me "Your seat would be better used by someone who is ready to quit. You have all the tools, you just have to make the decision." I knew she was right, and never went back to the group. I was always appreciative of what I learned and took that with me.

Another year passed.

It was time for my physical and my doctor, who knew how long I had been trying to quit, had some suggestions, which I took. I had some follow up appointments one of which happened to be 1 week after my quit date. I had other things planned in the weeks and months followed and joined a martial arts program. I used the tools I learned - like not smoking in your car and cleaning it out just before your quit date - they work.

How long have you been a non-smoker?

4 years

What are your three favorite Quit Tips?

  • no one ever quit by smoking
  • To cut down, smoking half ciggs, then quarter ciggs, when you think you need one. Try to skip them sometimes. Keep a log.
  • Plan you quit date, plan some things for after you quit

What prompted you to quit?

Sick and tired of being sick and tired.

How do you feel now?

Unblelievably better. Better than I ever expected.

What words of wisdom/support would you like to pass on to others who are in the process of quitting or who are thinking about it?

Gather as much information about this addiction as you can, learn as many tools as you can. Find tools that make really sense to you and use them.
